Happy New Year! At the start of the new year, it’s common to be setting resolutions. I used to do that but now I don’t believe in resolutions anymore, reason being it always gets forgotten as the year goes by.
Even if I’ve written down those resolutions, it still gets forgotten. During the first few months of the year, I may still go back to look at the resolutions to see what I’ve fulfilled and not fulfilled but after that, the resolutions never get looked at again till the end of the year when it’s time to set new resolutions. That’s when I’ll remember about my current resolutions which are mostly unfulfilled because it has been forgotten.
Not believing in resolutions doesn’t mean I don’t have any goals or aspirations. Of course I do hope for some changes to better myself and to have more progression in whatever I’ve been doing. For me, 2017 was a year of change. I do feel I’ve improved and grown in some aspects but I do want to have more changes and improve even more in 2018.
I suppose resolutions get forgotten because it’s overwhelming. With a list of goals to fulfill, it seems like there’s so much to do which actually dampens the motivation to get anything done. So what I believe in now is not decide at the beginning of the year specifically on the goals I want to accomplish but to constantly reflect throughout the year and let the ideas come naturally as the year goes by.
I didn’t set any resolutions last year in 2017 but I did unknowingly changed as I slowly worked on any ideas that came into my mind throughout the year. In fact, change should be ongoing. We should always be working on bettering ourselves. We don’t have to wait till the beginning of the year to decide we want to change this or change that or start doing this or doing that. We can change anything or start doing anything at any point of the year.
So have goals, have aspirations but don’t wait till the beginning of the year to decide to commit to everything when it then gets too overwhelming and ends up nothing is achieved. Commit to something everyday, throughout the year and it’s fine to start or change something later on in the year if the idea comes then.
